Darrel, on Slaty-backed gull the black on the primaries is only present 
on the outer webs, which are obscured on the spread underwing, therefore 
the underwing tips apear dusky, but not black. On American Herring Gulls 
and Western Gulls, both webs of the primary feathers are black such that 
they show black underwing tips.

Phil or others will correct me if I am mistaken.
