OBOL:

Definitions:
Grand Slam: In baseball -- hitting a home run with 3 men on base.
In birding -- seeing all the species of a genus in a
particular place.
Zono -- Zonotrichia sparrows, including
                Golden-crowned, White-crowned, White-throated, and Harris'
Sparrows

I don't particularly like the slang of saying "Zono grand slam" -- it sounds
so like a "hot-shot" birder thing.... Ah, well.

On Saturday, Carol Karlen & I went to Rudi Rudolph's mom's place on Bolland
Rd., (second driveway off Lone Elder Rd., S of Canby) around noon. We
stayed an hour and saw Golden-crowned Sparrows, B-c Chickadees, Spotted
Towhees, etc. Late on Sunday our quest for Sandhill Cranes in Clackamas
county took us past her house again. We met her and had a cordial visit.
Gracious lady. At sunset we didn't see many birds at her feeders.

This morning I got to her place at 7:30. I saw many GOLDEN-CROWNED
SPARROWS, several WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, plus Fox & Song Sparrows, D-e.
Juncos, Spotted Towhee. Then at 7:58 a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW appeared. At
one point I had 3 "Zonotrichias" in one binocular view. Add Redwing &
Brewer's Blackbirds, Scrub Jay, House Finch, Mourning Dove, California
Quail. Then at 8:10 the HARRIS' SPARROW appeared!!

So I guess I saw a home run with the bases loaded .. :-) :-) :-) :-)

Good birding, y'all,

Paul T. Sullivan
