[obol] beached bird question

OBOL,
About thirty years ago I knew an old guy in Seaside who knew when to check the tides for glass floats. He once found eighty four of them in one day. So my question is this. Is there a similar pattern with the waves that brings in birds at specific times? My walks on the beach have always been at random, but I'm thinking if a person knew the optimum time for looking for birds washing in, it might improve the chances of finding ones ( like Horned Puffins, and Thick-billed Murres) that were still alive. In the back of my mind it seems like the old guy I knew went out when the incoming tide corresponded with a direct westerly wind, but I'm not sure of that. Any of you seasoned beachwalkers/bird picker uppers able to give an answer?
