This report was mailed for David C. Bailey by http://birdnotes.net
Date: March 7, 2007
Location: The Cove (Seaside), Clatsop County, Oregon
Prevailing wind speed: 1-5 km/h gusting to: 6-11 km/h
Percentage of sky covered by clouds: 90%
Precipitation: drizzle
I stopped briefly at Sawyer Park and the road by the Lanai Motel on
my way back through town this afternoon just before a squall was
about to come through (I had left the rain on the south side of
Tillamook Head minutes before). The tide was beginning to ebb, but it
was doing so slowly due to the powerful storm surge.
The single ROCK SANDPIPER is still with the SURFBIRDS and BLACK
TURNSTONES.
Birds seen (in taxonomic order):
Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata)
Black Scoter (Melanitta nigra)
Red-throated Loon (Gavia stellata) 1
Western Grebe (Aechmophorus occidentalis)
Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) 1
Pelagic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pelagicus) 1
Black Turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala) 20
Surfbird (Aphriza virgata) 50
Rock Sandpiper (Calidris ptilocnemis) 1 [1]
Mew Gull (Larus canus)
Western Gull (Larus occidentalis)
Glaucous-winged Gull (Larus glaucescens)
Glaucous-winged x Western Gull (Larus glaucescens x occidentalis)
Footnotes:
[1] Rock Sandpiper: with the flock of SURFBIRDS AND TURNSTONES near
the NE end of Sawyer Park on the rocks near the surf.
Total number of species seen: 13
