     I saw a White-tailed Kite perched
on a broken ash tree along the West Fork of
Dairy Creek at 8:30 this morning. It was
west of the jct of Van Dehey Lane and Hwy 47.
This is almost 30km west of where I saw one
8 days ago in WEst Union. I don't know if
it's the same bird, but only one other person
reported seeing the one last week and it was
absent on all my subsequent visits.
VanDehey Lane is a dead end road creating
an island of residential land in a vast expanse
of low-intensity agriculture and riparian zones.
I have lived here nearly 14 yrs and only drove
down it last week for the first time as it provides
good viewing access to a lot of country. Hwy 47
is NOT the place to park for raptor counts or
much of anything else. I suspect no other birder
has ventured down there before either.
Not only is this one of only 3 or 4 Kites I
have seen in Washington County since 1980, but it
is the first time I've seen them here twice in
the same year. Perhaps this accounts in some small
part for the missing Kites in Tillamook and Yamhill
counties. Lars Norgren
