I visited a friend today in the Newport area and was amazed at the diversity of
songbirds in his yard...he maintains multiple feeders, including thistle
feeders and suet, and keeps them well stocked...plus he has lots of native
vegetation around, trees, and a nice garden. He is not a birder but loves birds
and got quite a kick out of learning how to identify some of them....in fact, I
think I may have hooked a new birder :-) As you guys know I'm not an expert
birder and I probably know less about identifying songbirds than any other
group....so I'm breaking these down into how certain I am:
100% Certain We Saw:
Purple Finch (a male/female pair that kept coming back to a close feeder
multiple times)
Western Meadowlark
Varied Thrush
Dark-eyed Junco
Golden-crowned Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Black-capped Chickadee
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Fox Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Spotted Towhee
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Stellar Jay
American Crow
House Sparrow
European Starling
Northern Flicker (several - including a male that had vividly red
mustache...and red in the undertail)
Birds I'm Almost Certain We Saw:
American Goldfinch (at one of the thistle feeders much of the time)
Savannah Sparrow
House Finch
Birds I couldn't Identify (and didn't take the time to try):
Several other species of song birds with lots of yellow (including several
warblers) + a couple of rather non-descript brown species (one may have been a
cowbird).
An expert songbirder would have had a field-day in this yard! Good place to go
back and practice for me :-)
