OK Dan, what's a Marsh Hawk, Dennis
After hearing from several of you I completely believe a Merlin capable of taking a Rock Pigeon. I knew they would not hesitate to try, but from all the personal comments I am sure they are very capable.
I was aware that Merlin's former name was Pigeon Hawk. In fact I remember when it was so! I also remember when Peregrine was still called Duck Hawk by some people! So, how old am I?
I always thought that the reason Merlins were called Pigeon Hawks was because at times their flight resembles a pigeon, or perhaps it is because sometimes a pigeon's flight resembles a Merlin. I am not sure about that, but I do know that at times I do a double take when I see a pigeon coming in fast to a perch, or just going by me. For a split second, and from certain angles, they do resemble an in-flight Merlin. But I am willing to discard that theory if the real reason they were called Pigeon Hawks is because they like to take pigeons. I doubt if anyone would look at a Mallard and mistake it for a Peregrine. Well, there might be someone, but that person will probably remain silent.
