Howdy OBOLers,

Some mobbing songbirds fortuitously directed me to the
location of one NORTHERN PYGMY OWL this morning
(Friday) at Tryon Creek State Park.

The mobbers were particularly active and distressed at
the sight of one of their flock mates having its
innards yanked out. Me thinks it was a Pine Siskin
but the slope, the wind and the ivy prevented me from
fiding feathers. The owl was unperturbed and sat on
its perch for about 2 hours while its parasympathetic
system engaged.

Also had good looks at PILEATED WOODPECKERS and
COOPERS HAWKS, as well as a RED-TAILED HAWK gliding
through the understory in accipiter fashion. Many of
the usual suspects were also there. Heard a BARRED
OWL at mid-day which seemed common when I lived in
Florida.

Cheers,
John Deshler
