In the case of B Combs' reported  Cooper's Hawk behavior I have the
additional observation to post:  Three years ago I arrived home (Baker
Blvd in Eugene) after noon to find a Cooper's Hawk standing in our
garden pool/birdbath.  She remained in the water for ten to fifteen
minutes, bathing meticulously.  In the course of her bathing she raised
one foot at a time and groomed and cleaned toe by toe.
The pool, designed for birds, lies at ground level, six feet diameter,
ovoid, with graduated depth, rough bird-friendly surface. The pool sits
twenty feet from our entryway where I stood in shadow behind a glass
wall.
