[obol] PHOTOS:Wayne Hoffman's gull

After seeing Wayne's pics and studying the Olsen & Larsson text and pics, I am
wondering if this cute (not ugly) little guy might be a western instead of a
slaty-backed, but maybe the wymani subspecies, not the occidentalis usually
found here....with the slighter darker mantle and paler eye.

I mean if a Slaty-backed gull can wonder over from Asia occasionally, surely we
could get a Western Gull from south of the Golden Gate Bridge.

BTW, I have seen some "Western Gulls" at this same spot with an even paler eye
that did "pop" out at you and with more streaking around the eye than what
Wayne's pics show and more like the photos shown in Olsen & Larsson. Of course
the color of the iris may be different in a reduced res digitized pic on a
computer monitor than what Wayne saw in real life.
