This afternoon on the ocean side of Bayocean spit we saw a group of about 7 small terns flying north. They were much smaller than the Caspian Terns in the area and their flight was direct and close to the water. We were able to see a dark wedge on the wings of one of them but we were unable to get a good look at the others so at least one was probably a COMMON TERN. We could not locate the Tufted Duck on Lake Meares and we only saw one Ring-necked Duck, but we didn't search for long.
As an aside, at Cape Lookout we saw a steady stream of northbound Gray Whales, including several that were very close to the cape. The closest view was of a whale that was almost directly below the end of the trail. There were also several groups of Harbor Porpoises right off the tip of the cape.
