On Saturday March 31, while we were doing a habitat restoration
planting at the Steigerwald Lake NWR we heard a bird call twice that was
unfamiliar to me. After the end of the project as we drove out the road
across the wetland "Lonesome George" the MUTE SWAN that has been present
since first found on 2/6/06 by Ken Knittle was next to the road. This
bird was aggressive and displaying even after I got out of my truck and
photographed it from about a fifty foot distance, the closest I have ever
gotten to this bird. It then produced a strange call which negated the
term "mute" swan. While observing this bird we also flushed an AMERICAN
BITTERN and I was able to get several VIRGINIA RAILS to respond to my
imitation of their calls. I had tried to elicit a response in the same
place yesterday without any luck but had a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT pop up
instead.
