I walked down my street (Avenue I) to the beach and then walked a
quarter mile south and north of that access. The currents have
deposited on the beach off of Lewis and Clark Way the small flotsam
of mostly small woody debris that collects in the eddy of The Cove.
This pile (5 cm deep in places) has attracted most of the beach gulls
that are usually loafing at The Cove parking lot at Seltzer Park. In
the flotsam were many small (1 to 3 cm long and 0.5-1 cm thick)
sponges that I think may be natural sponges. The other alternative is
that they are little bits of synthetic foam that have gotten worn
smooth. I have collected some to inspect in more detail to get at
this question.

Whimbrel 6
