In addition to the single Dusky Flycatcher that continues to be seen at the
"east meadow" at Skinner Butte, Diane Pettey and I found at least two and
likely three Dusky Flycatchers this morning near the top of Hawkins Drive in
s. Eugene. The birds were in a large open area off Randy St. which goes e.
off Hawkins just before you enter the "Hawkins View" neighborhood near the
top of the hill. Go east on Randy (off Hawkiins) until the road makes a
sharp turn to the right. Park at this corner a walk upslope (to the east)
from the brush piles at the little dead end. There is some pink flagging
along a small stream than comes down the hill from the northeast. There
were at least two birds feeding low in the vegetation along this small
stream. They were calling almost constantly as they moved about.
Skinner Butte continues to be very birdy. We joined Maitreya, Barry
McKenzie, Sylvia Maulding, Tom Mickel and a host of other birders and found
the following:
Warbling Vireo -- lots
Cassin's Vireo -- at least 5
Olive-sided Flycatcher -- 1
W. Wood-Pewee -- 2
Dusky Flycatcher --1 (in lower east meadow)
Orange-crowned Warbler -- lots including at least one "gray-headed" type
Nashville Warbler -- 4-5
Yellow-rumped Warbler -- lots
Black-throated Gray Warbler 10+
Townsend's Warbler 15+
Wilson's Warbler -- lots
Western Tanager -- several (heard more than seen)
Golden-crowned Sparrow -- about 4-5
White-crowned Sparrow -- 4-5
We saw two Black Terns s. of the observation platform at the end of Royal
Ave. We saw nothing else at Fern Ridge that hasn't been widely reported
previously.
