Dear All,

I have received word from Sandy Leaptrott that she and her
husband saw a Black-and-White Warbler in east Portland last night. Their
address is

3309 NE 157th Pl, Portland OR 97230 for anyone wishing to see if it is still
in the neighborhood. See the correspondence below.

Sincerely,

Tim Janzen

Portland

Dear Tim.

It was around for 5 minutes or less last night. I chose to look at it
closely for a bit because I'd never seen anything like it before, when I
tried to sneak out of the kitchen for the camera it took off.

Jim and I are positive about the identification. When the movement first
caught my eye I thought it was a chickadee. But when it landed, it stopped
moving. I was able to see the distinctive markings on its head, the
striping on its back and the white wing bar and shoulder patch because it
was looking in the kitchen window at Jim and I. I asked Jim to take a good
look because he has a great eye and memory for detail. Then it came out of
the bushes and landed on the fence around the fish pond. So Jim saw it from
about 10 feet away, I saw it from 20 feet (cooking dinner). We picked out
the same bird from several field guides, so I checked my Birds of Oregon
because its not supposed to be here.

I'm watching for it today, hoping to see it again but no luck so far.

Sincerely

Sandy

PS: I feel this is my year for exciting birds in the garden!

Dear Sandy,

A Black-and-White Warbler would be a very good bird in Multnomah
County. Make sure that your husband and you are positive that it wasn't a
Black-throated Gray Warbler, which would be much more likely. Is the
Black-and-White Warbler still around?

Sincerely,

Tim

I don't have a picture to back this up, but my husband and I just saw a
Black and White Warbler at the fish pond in my back yard. No question in my
mind that's what we saw.

Does anyone care about such a thing?
