Hi all,

Doug Robinson, Michael Dossett, Karl Fairchild and I set a new Benton County
big day record yesterday, finding 141 species within the county between
midnight and 10pm. We didn't turn up any rarities but saw some nice birds,
most notable:

Cabell Marsh:
8 - BLACK-NECKED STILTS
1 - CLARK'S GREBE
2 - WESTERN GREBES
10 - WHITE-FRONTED GEESE

McFadden Marsh:
1 - WILSON'S PHALAROPE
1 - SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER
1 - EURASIAN WIGEON
1 - GREAT EGRET

Bruce Rd:
1 - YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
1 - LESSER YELLOWLEGS (flyover)

Finley Refuge Rd:
2 - WESTERN KINGBIRDS
1 - AMERICAN BITTERN

 Willamette Park:
1 - BULLOCK'S ORIOLE

Bellfountain Rd wetlands:
4 - SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS
(shorebird numbers way down)

E.E. Wilson new wetland:
1 - SOLITARY SANDPIPER

Philomath Sewage Ponds:
1 - RUDDY DUCK

Knoll Terrage Sewage Ponds:
1 - RED-NECKED PHALAROPE

Monroe Sewage Ponds:
2 - BLACK PHOEBES

Mary's Peak Rd (all birds heard only near dawn):
5 - NORTHERN PYGMY-OWLS
5 - BLUE GROUSE
1 - RUFFED GROUSE
3 - MOUNTAIN QUAIL

Alsea Falls area:
1 - AMERICAN DIPPER

Worst misses were Horned Lark, Green Heron, Blue-winged Teal (not here yet),
Rough-winged Swallow, Vesper Sparrow, Gray Jay, and Saw-whet Owl.

We drove 270 miles, raised more than $1000 for Corvallis Audubon (go Karl!),
got a $242 speeding ticket, and birded for 22 hours straight. Non-bird
highlights were the pre-dawn view from Mary's Peak, a coyote in a Corvallis
neighborhood, and the celebratory pizza dinner :) Can't wait for next
year...

What a day!

Good birding,
Noah Strycker
