Good Morning:
Our first yellow warbler arrived today along with some lovely weather. It
was happily gleaning bugs in the chokecherries when I heard, then observed
it. May 8th is about the average arrival date here at our place 5 miles west
of Hines. The earliest record we have here for YEWA is May 2nd. I just noted
that we saw a calliope hummingbird on May 9th in 1997. Guess I better get
the hummingbird feeder out right away.
We've been away for some time, so our notes are a bit sketchy. Here are a
few items from the last few days:
The usual sparrows are around. White-crowns are dwindling in numbers.
Brewers', lark, and vespers are evident. A golden-crowned sparrow or two
were here for a couple days, first sighted on May 4.
A small group of Franklin's gulls flew over on Sunday and a fair number of
cliff swallows also appeared that day.
I saw my first two male Cassin's finches this morning, but they could have
easily been here earlier and we would have missed them.
Another item of note - the tree frogs were calling from our new pond for the
first time last night. What a joyful sound!
Nuf for now. Have a great day.
Patty
PS A male black-headed grosbeak just arrived while I was typing this note.
