On Mother's day my wife and I birded in Klicktitat County to
avoid the cloudy skies and rain we were having in western Skamania
County. At the Tidyman Road Ponds in Dallesport we had a close encounter
with an adult GOLDEN EAGLE, we had a bird in the same spot on April 14th.
A trip up the Dalles Mountain Road was great for wildflowers and only
marginal for birds due to the high winds. Birds seen here included a
SWAINSON'S HAWK and a PRAIRIE FALCON. A quick stop in Goldendale produced
a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE at the grain elevators in town.
A visit to the Balch Road area failed to produce any Acorn or
Lewis' Woodpeckers but while watching the granary tree I heard a bird
high overhead giving a "prrrt" type call and spotted a ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER spiraling down out of the sky. This bird landed on a fence
line giving us excellent close up views.
The best wildflowers we found were Mission Bells and Calypso
Bulbosa orchids about five miles south of Appleton.
