Last week it was Geese vs Golden Eagle. Today it was Yellow-headed Blackbird vs Yellow-headed Blackbird. Carolyn and I were returning from Klamath Falls this morning and made a brief stop at the Wood River Birding Trail at the head of Agency Lake where I noticed flapping wings in the water. When I put the binos on it, I saw a male Yellow-headed Blackbird flapping around in the water. My first thought was a turtle or snake was holding his legs from under the water. After flopping around in an area of about 4 square feet for a couple of minutes he took off and landed in some nearby reeds. All of a sudden an orange head emerged from under the water followed by a couple of wings. The submerged bird struggled to the reed bank after several rest stops and pulled himself out of the water. When we left he was still sitting on the edge of the reeds.
The first male just sat up on the reeds and did not go after him again. Mrs. blackbird was sitting nearby watching the whole thing.
We went to K. Falls to watch the Western and Clark's Grebes do their water dancing and were not disappointed pointed.
