New River, 5;30- 9 AM, clear, sunny, 46-53F, not much
wind until about 8:30:

The highlight of the morning was another good day of
BLACK SWIFT migration. On the 16 May I had a half
hour count of 175 and a total of 248, with most birds
high up and and a bit inland. Today the birds were
low, just over the treetops over the inland ridges and
were in smaller groups, 5-30, with birds overhead
every few minutes all morning. I did a half hour
count after my point count surveys and came up with
159. My total number for the morning was 211, but
like last week, my visibility was obscured most of the
morning so I imagine many hundreds or perhaps over a
thousand swifts past overhead this morning. I tried
hard but could not turn a single Black Swift into a
Vaux's or any other swift species.

Other birds of note were several flocks of 20+ CEDAR
WAXWINGS moving north and scads of RED CROSSBILLS.
Almost all the breeding species are now in, just
waiting on the first nighthawks which usually don't
show up for another week or so.

Merry migration!
