Greetings, obol:

Obol listserv subscribers may recall my previous appeals for information regarding WILSON'S SNIPE sightings in the Willamette Valley region -- many thanks to those who have responded to this request in the past year or so! These snipe sighting reports have been invaluable as I continue research on the species.

As part of a graduate project at Oregon State University, I am investigating snipe movement and habitat use across the annual cycle in the Willamette Valley. During the past winter and early spring, my field crew and I have been tracking snipe movements using radio telemetry. (Many birders and residents in the mid- and southern Valley may have observed a conspicuous field vehicle driving the Valley roads, equipped with radio telemetry antennae boasting a mere 12.5' height clearance! That's us, radio-tracking shorebird movements). Interestingly, many of the winter/early spring radio-tagged snipe have dispersed from the region, as seasonal wetlands dry. Currently, I am continuing efforts to investigate spring/summer Wilson's Snipe habitat and movement patterns.

If you have any information regarding spring/summer snipe locations, or happen to observe any WILSON'S SNIPE during your spring and summertime rambles in the Willamette Valley, I would be very interested in (and appreciative of) these reports.

Please send replies involving encounters with WILSON'S SNIPE to Britt Cline at: bcline at usgs.gov

Thanks!
Britt
