I have lived in my house for 30 years, and this is the first that Pinyon Jays have nested (that I know of) in the neighborhood. One pair nested in a 100 ft. Ponderosa Pine across the alley from my yard and another in one of the Pondos a few houses up the street. Every day for over a month you could hear there odd calling from dawn to dusk. It really got loud when one of the local Red-tails came over. The four adult jays would harass the hawk constantly until it was a quarter mile away. The young fledged last week and the calling was non-stop until today. The two families are gone, off to join the big flock which hits the neighborhood once or twice a month for the rest of the year. I live on a residential street just NE of the Mill District in Bend with quite a few 100 ft. tall 60-100 year old Ponderosa Pine trees.
