OBOL,
Crossing the DeFazio footbridge across the Willamatte River a little after noon today, I heard an odd bird noise, a sort of yelping squawk. Down near the river a REDTAILED HAWK and an adult GREEN HERON were just parting ways. I think the heron had evaded an attack just before I looked. The heron settled down and perched briefly on a mostly submerged log, near shore. The hawk flew up and then off toward downtown. A little later, out over the former dump site in east Alton Baker Park, I saw a kiting WHITE-TAILED KITE.
(Earlier, on Skinner Butte, I had had no luck finding the Mountain Chickadees reported yesterday.)
     Don DeWitt, Eugene
