OBOL,
To add to the yard bird discussion: I've kept three serious yard lists.
The first, in residential Springfield with developed trees and about half
an acre, is tabled out at 60 species, and without getting lucky, won't add
anything more to the list. The second, a quarter-acre yard in South
Eugene with a broader mix of trees, also reached 60 species, but in a
shorter amount of time living there.
Eddie and I are now renting on a two-acre property way north on River Rd
(almost to Thistledown Farm) bordered by a canal and with lots of great
trees. We had 18 species in the yard yesterday, including 2
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, new yard bird #65. There are lots of birds I
could still add to this list. Yesterday we also had 3 RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKERS move through in a noisy, tight bunch. The resident W
SCREECH-OWL was in the barn. I had at least 2 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS mixed
in with the Chickadees and Kinglets. Complete list is on birdnotes.net.
I count any and all birds I see in the yard, no matter where I am. I also
count anything I can see or hear while I'm in the yard. This includes an
Olive-sided Flycatcher I found on the opposite side of the block from my
Springfield yard years ago, went running back to the yard, and climbed up
on the fence to see.
