I spent the morning walking and birding Champoeg SP. About 10:30 am I located a late SAY'S PHOEBE along the Oak Grove road. I was watching some finches come down to the road and fly back into the oaks when I saw it prominently perched near the tree top. It did a couple of flycatcher moves and went across the road to the south side trees and perched a while. I lost sight when it flew toward the Visitor Center. I returned a couple of hours later and found no birds at the location. Directions for anyone wishing to try to relocate the bird: Enter the park and go past the fee station to the right. Cross the painted pedestrian crossing and ahead you will see a "Speed 25" sign. There are oaks on both sides of the road. This is the place. Checking between there and the visitor center might prove useful. There is an old structure and fencing behind the center. Pamela Johnston reported a Say's Phoebe last year for October 31st in adjacent Yamhill County. (Birdnotes.net)
When I visited the boat landing I found a PIED-BILLED GREBE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and down stream about 100 yards a single EARED GREBE. The first Eared Grebe I have ever seen on the Willamette River.
The WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were common and vocal around Oak Grove parking lot as well as the afore mentioned Phoebe location.
A HUTTON'S VIREO was along the river trail in the oaks and big-leaf maples. Otherwise, many expected fall species were seen. Not a SINGLE RAPTOR nor the sometimes ACORN WOODPECKERS were observed.
