We had several new fall/winter birds show up at the home feeders in the past
week. Noteworthy are Bohemian Waxwing, Stellar's Jay, Bushtit.

On November 11, at the Dowell Ranch on the Owyhee River near Rome I was
surprised to see 3 Red Crossbill feeding on spruce cones. A variety of water
birds were on the river - American Coot, Canvasback, Redhead, American
Widgeon, Mallard, Lesser Scaup, Green-winged Teal, Wood Duck,Gadwall,
Northern Pintail, Hooded Merganser, Common Goldeneye, Ruddy Duck, Belted
Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, Killdeer (notably absent was Canada Goose).
Raptors/Owls included Golden Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Prairie Falcon,
Cooper's Hawk, American Kestrel, Rough-legged Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Barn
Owl. Song Sparrows, and White-crowned Sparrows were abundant (there were
likely several other species but I was more interested in birds in the bag
rather than the list). Chukar, Quail, and Ring-necked Pheasant were present
but sparse. Common "barn-yard" birds included House Sparrow, Rock Dove,
Starling, Dark-eyed Junco and several varieties of domesticated chicken.

Cheers, Wayne Bowers
