Today, Paula Vanderheul and I conducted the Central (?) Benton Co. raptor
run which goes from Kiger Is. to Finley Refuge Rd. We covered 59.5 miles in
4 ½ hours with the temperature ranging from 42F to 49F. under partly cloudy
skies. Here’s what we saw:

Red-tailed Hawk: 28

American Kestrel: 24

Northern Harrier: 11

Bald Eagle: 2 adults

Rough-legged Hawk: 2

White-tailed Kite: 2 – at the Lincoln Prairie Overlook, Finley

Peregrine Falcon: 1

We also had at least 15 Ravens, 4 Great Blue Herons and 4 Great Egrets. A
very yellow HORNED LARK was near the west end of Herbert.

New this year on this route is the recently opened boardwalk to Cabell Marsh
at Finley. We had an excellent view of the marsh which contained a nice
assortment of ducks – Mallard, Pintail, Wigeon, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal,
Ring-billed Ducks – along with D-c Cormorants, Tundra Swans and goodly
numbers of Canadas and Cacklers. We saw 5 of the Red-tails here along with
the Peregrine Falcon.
