Date: November 27, 2007
Location: Clatsop Beaches, Clatsop County, Oregon
Beached bird survey by car from Gearhart entrance to middle of Camp
Rilea beach.
PARASITIC JAEGER was the highlight.
Birds seen (in taxonomic order):
Northern Fulmar 59 [1]
Short-tailed Shearwater 1
Parasitic Jaeger 1 [2]
Common Murre 1
Cassin's Auklet 1 [3]
Footnotes:
[1] Northern Fulmar: more than half were pale plumaged (white
underparts) birds
[2] Parasitic Jaeger: a fairly fresh and mostly intact specimen.
Juvenile, likely hatch-year. Molting primaries almost through
molt with only outer-most left to molt. Similar with retrices.
No prominent central tail feathers. Bill was thin and
measurements matched Parasitic perfectly. This bird most closely
resembled a dark morph, though not as dark as the extreme
depicted in the Sibly Guide.
[3] Cassin's Auklet: fresh and whole
Total number of species seen: 5
Also of note was a medium-sized deceased SALMON SHARK, a relative of the Great White.
Sincerely,
David C. Bailey
