The torrential rain let up for a few minutes in the
afternoon and I went out to the north spit of Coos Bay
and hit a "sucker hole" just right- sunny with 30 mph
winds but no rain, here are the highlights:

3000- LEAST SANDPIPERS
2000- WESTERN SANDPIPERS
20- LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS (all I heard was this
species)
several- PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
1- RED PHALAROPE
80- GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
1- PEREGRINE FALCON, chasing shorebirds of course
30- BARN SWALLOWS
10+ VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS

It is getting pretty late for VG Swallows so it was
interesting to read that Troy Guy reported a large
flock on the north coast also. There are no Coos
records from October or November (with one rare CBC
record in December) so it'll be interesting to see how
much longer they are reported- with the change in
weather it might be that these may be some of the last
reports.

Have a good October all,
Tim R
