  Dear Fall Friends,
While birding with friends at Baskett Slough Sunday ... yes, in the rain and wind ... we walked to Morgan Lake ? south of the narrows before the trail closed. It was dry as posted,
  very few birds
  though did see over, I finally quit counting! 300 + + + + + newts. We could
not look for birds as had to watch our boots as we walked 50 or so feet.
(After leaving parking lot, across from old barn that has been taken or fallen down, head up small roadway. It heads south, veers north, and just at the turn south again, as you begin to see the reservoir like area, were the rough skinned newts. Standing in one place, and only looking off one side of the road, I counted over 20. Needless to say we had to walk very carefully as they were in the road as well and it was quite hard not to accidentally step on them.
................. On way back to slough, still on Smithfield Road?, near a bulldozed out mucky bit of water next to a farm, we saw
  White and Golden Crowned Sparrows
  Lesser Goldfinches
  Killdeer
(Narrows : Dowitchers, Egrets, GB Heron, Kestrel, Red-Tail, Wigeon, Mallard,
Many Violet Green Swallows and Barn Swallows - seemingly "wind surfing" in the breeze over the water. Almost "standing still" though flying.

25 birds on a cold but miraculous "New - ty" Day!

  Beaverton and Madras
