Down here in coastal Humboldt County, ca. 100 mi. s. of Oregon, there's been a strong movement of Aleutian Cackling Geese heading down the coast throughout the day so far, involving probably thousands of birds. The population of this form has increased from a few hundred nesting on one island (or was it two: Buldir, and another discovered later?) in the 1960s to more than 100,000 under protection. The early spring staging concentrations and sunrise fly-offs from Humboldt Bay Refuge have become a spectacular annual phenomenon that is much-covered by the news media. It is also celebrated in Crescent City by the Aleutian Goose Festival. The man who once headed up the Federal recovery project, Dr. Paul Springer of Arcata, passed away in May.
Are Coos and Curry birders possibly seeing and hearing Aleutians today?
