Today, by e-mail no less (1st time, used to be by US mail), I received a banded bird "recovery" from the Bird Banding Lab. These are always exciting to get!

Was for a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK banded on 10 Aug 2006 at the Applegate River banding station (Josephine Co, just west of the Jackson Co boundary and Provolt). Was banded as a Hatch Year (hatched in 2006) male.

The bird was recovered (dead, which is the usual case) on 20 June 2007 at a residence along Meridian Road, which was somewhat southeast of Eagle Point (Jackson Co). Spoke with the Lady that found the bird and it appears it may have flew into a window. The recovery location is about 27 miles kind of northeast of the Applegate River banding location.

Most Hatch Year (juvenile) birds, it appears, do not return to where they were fledged (known from past banding data). However, this recovery provided support for them returning fairly close to their fledged location (as the Grosbeak flies that is).
