Magnus Persmark and I looked for birds in coastal Lane county today. Spent
a bit of time with Diane Pettey.
Didn't find much. No seabird movement at all off Brays Point and Klootchman
except a heavy movement of pelicans (many were so far out on the horizon
that I started calling them Great-billed Albatross) and a steady but thin
movement of Pacific and Common Loons.
Oddly, the only alcid I saw, besides 2 Pigeon Guillemot flybys and a few
murres, was a northbound Cassin's Auklet.
Gull numbers at coastal roost sites were way down at all sites, owing mainly
to 90 percent of the Cals being gone. Mews are building slowly. I saw half
a dozen Bonies off Klootchman.
Hermit Thrushes seem to have arrived in numbers. We had 4-5 around
Stonefield-Tenmile Rd and a few elsewhere. Fox Sparrow numbers are up. We
had only two Savannah Sparrows all day under nice conditions. A lot of
Myrtle Warbs are in, not many Audubon's around.
One peregrine near Big Creek.
Five Band-tailed Pigeons north of Heceta Head seems a little odd - I have
seen none in north Lane Co all fall.
