[obol] Book recommendation

Bill,
This is a little book with solid information on habits, food, and seasonal
movements of the Band-tailed Pigeon in the Northwest, followed by
descriptions of shooting techniques and forest practices in Oregon that
troubled the author. The author, a hunter himself, distinguishes "shooters"
from the "hunters" who have an interest in the animal they hunt and in its
preservation. He builds a clear case against shooters who would line up on
ridges above feeding areas and at mineral springs where pigeons flocked to
drink, and blast away at as many pigeons as possible, and an unconcerned
game commission that answered to these people. There is also mention of
continuing pigeon and dove massacres in Fla and in South America. He
concludes optimistically, that the population of bandtails is stabilizing
after 12 years of total protection in B.C. and Wash., and a much reduced
kill in Or. and Cal. Still, there remain the threats induced by a rapidly
changing landscape and shooter's mentality.
The book has about 170 pp of text, including a 16-page bibliography. There
are 12 pages of color photos by the author and his wife and many scattered
drawings by David Hagerbaumer.
Best,
Larry

Larry,
I'd be interested to know a brief synopsis, conclusion of that book. I have
not noticed it, but I do not notice many changes. As my life is quite
full, I have little time to read such. Any chance you would share some
more on that with OBOL?
Bill
Oh yes, thanks for the date on when the Least Bittern was seen at BSNWR.
I knew the year and month, but did not have the exact date for my records.
