Hi all,
Marilyn and I conducted our weekly shorebird survey at Hatfield Lake
today and were surprised to find a 1st year female NORTHERN PARULA, only
the 2nd record of this species for Deschutes County. It was located near
where the water enters the back pond. It was in with mixed flock of
warblers and chickadees.
What to look for: Short-tailed, chickadee-sized bird with blue-gray
upperparts except for a green back; bright yellow throat and breast, and
white abdomen and undertail coverts. Less conspicuous were white
wing-bars and faint white eyeline.
Other birds of interest at the ponds were:
Short-billed Dowitcher - 2 (front pond)
Long-billed Dowitcher - 1 (front pond)
Baird's Sandpiper - 1 (front pond)
Red-necked Phalarope - 8 (back pond)
Common Goldeneye - 1 female (back pond where it has spent the summer)
Keep your eyes open -- fall warbler migration has begun!
