We forgot to mention several things about the yellow-legged peep at Bayocean Spit on Sunday. The bird was NOT a Pectoral or Sharp-tailed Sandpiper; it was about Least Sandpiper size, or a bit larger. In addition to the things we mentioned, it had a reddish-brown forehead, not white like Least. It looked somewhat like a miniature juvie Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, though it had less buff on the belly and had a white throat. It was also less bright than a Sharp-tailed.
We were thinking it had several characteristics of a Long-toed Stint (and not a Least) because of a white throat and buff-washed, somewhat sparsely streaked breast, giving it less of a brown-headed appearance. The extensive reddish crown was bright; we have not seen Least Sandpipers similar to this in the past. Also, very importantly, a distinctly lower (Pectoral pitch) flight call did not sound like a Least. Does anyone know a website where we could listen to a Long-toed Stint call? The peep stood nearly as tall as the Westerns, though we don't know if it was due to leg length or size. Overall, plumage seemed less bright than a juvenile Least Sandpiper.
Good luck to any seekers, and opinions are welcome!
