Hi all,
Marilyn and I visited Wickiup Reservoir in Deschutes County on Labor Day
to look for shorebirds, but didn't find any. What we did find were many
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS. I counted 110, but a friend of ours who has
spent the past several weeks there says 350-400 pelicans have been in
the area all of August.
This is an unprecedented number of pelicans in Deschutes County, no
doubt enhanced by the tight restrictions that have been placed on
motorized travel below the high water mark at Wickiup.
Other species/numbers of interest included:
Western Grebe - 150+
Clark's Grebe - 1 at least
Greater White-fronted Goose - 1 (up to 150 have been reported in the
past week)
Cooper's Hawk - 1
Northern Goshawk - 1
Merlin - 1
probable jaeger - 1
Ring-billed Gull - 40+
California Gull - 6
Cassin's Vireo - 1
Warbling Vireo - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 5
Yellow Warbler - 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 29
