OBOL:
Carol Karlen & I headed south on Friday, Aug. 31, toward the 21st Oregon
Shorebird Festival. The speakers were excellent, the food great, the people
interested, and the field trips successful. Another fine event. Thanks to
all who organized and participated.
Friday:
We checked, but found NO ELEGANT TERNS at
- Road's End, Lincoln City
- mouth of Siletz Bay
- south end of Siletz Bay
- Gleneden beach
- Fogarty Creek
- Cape Foulweather & Otter Crest as viewed from there
- Moolack beach
- Yaquina Head
- Idaho Flats, Newport (2 Caspian Terns)
- south jetty, Newport
- Seal Rocks
- Yachats
- Bob Creek
- north jetty pond, Florence
- north jetty, Florence
- Winchester Bay
- Charleston
But we did see 4 Marbled Godwits and a RUFF at the north jetty at Florence.
We did see 12 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the north spit settling ponds,
Coos Bay.
Saturday:
Best birds were 50 MARBLED MURRELETS right off Cape Arago. More were seen
by others later.
Sunday:
Best birds were 11 SNOWY PLOVERS on the beach south of Bandon and the
WHITE-WINGED DOVE in Terri Loomis' yard in Bandon.
Monday we stopped at the south jetty at Florence a few hours after the
Elegant Terns were seen again. Alas, we didn't see any. :-(
Good birding, everyone,
Paul T. Sullivan
