Andrew and OBOL,
I think I have been hearing the same call, for maybe the past two
weeks. The call I've been hearing is louder and harsher than familiar
Western Screech-Owl calls. I was awakened by it a couple of times in
the pre-dawn hours (shame on me for not being up yet). It was so
intense I actually convinced myself it was a Western Gray Squirrel
sounding off in the pitch black dark. But, I have been hearing a lot
of conventional WESO bouncing ball and trilling calls too. This is
different. Since I started trying to record it several nights ago, I
naturally have not heard it. I think this is a screech owl, but it is
surprisingly strong, as described by Andrew. I haven't yet checked
the CLO Owl CDs, but they are a more likely place to find this
unusual call than a website, including CLO's.
