[obol] amorphous blob

The amorphous blob in Mike Patterson's photos looks like an adult male Sea
Lion (California) sans skin, and possibly sans head too. Sabine's gull was
cool.

Obol -

Fisher Unit this morning, 7:30-10:30am:

5 - COMMON TERNS distant over the reservoir
1 - BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER
2 - SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS
1 - BLACK PHOEBE at the Cottonwood Pond
1 - LESSER YELLOWLEGS
2 - AMERICAN BITTERNS at the very end of Royal Ave. gravel road
40 - AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS
5 - PURPLE MARTINS

Otherwise, a smattering of dowitchers, yellowlegs, and peeps, no big flocks.
I walked all the way to Cantrell Rd and back and pished up a bunch of
yellowthroats and Savannah Sparrows, not much else in the dry areas.

Good birding,
Noah Strycker

Steve Warner and I were doing COASST beached bird surveys along Del Rey
Beach this morning. The amorphous blob reported yesterday has migrated
about 300m south along the beach and is attracting quite a lot of
attention.

A SABINE'S GULL flew in and checked things out:
http://home.pacifier.com/~neawanna/temp/delrey20070906sm14.JPG
http://home.pacifier.com/~neawanna/temp/delrey20070906sm17.JPG

We also had a close flyby BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE obviously interested in
what all the other gulls were up to.

Steve also reports that there is still at least 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER
at the Necanicum Estuary. I stopped b this afternoon and saw 10 MARBLED
GODWITS, 9 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, plus the usual small stuff.

Obol,
Over the last two days I've been watching migrants at or near my office
on the hill above Fern Ridge dam. There is a hidden little pond which today
had 2 WILSON'S WARBLERS, a PAC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, and the regular chickadees
(both kinds). Yesterday a WILLOW FLYCATCHER made a brief stop. Tuesday
there was a nice flock which I saw maybe a quarter of. It included multiple
BLACK-THR GRAY, WILSON'S, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS. A WARBLING and
HUTTON'S VIREO were also in the group. Juncos have been around for a week
or two now. Happy migration!

Just returned from outside where I found a female TOWNSEND'S WARBLER in the
chickadee flock. This represents the earliest arrival date at Fern Ridge
that I have record of. Also 1 BLACK-THR GRAY, and 1 ORANGE-CR Warbler.

Hello All,

There was 1 FOX SPARROW at my feeders today on Mt. Tabor in Portland. I'll
have to check my notes but this is a bit early for this location.
Considering all the migration reports coming in, it isn't a big surprise,
though. There are still small numbers of assorted warblers, flycatchers,
vireos and tanagers moving through.

Good birding.

I found a basic plumaged American Golden Plover near Prineville today. The
bird was in a flooded field next to the new Prineville Sewer Ponds. I also
found the first White-crowned Sparrow of the fall.

.................An absolutely gorgeous afternoon--72 degrees with a NW
wind and full sun-----my kind of weather!!!! Cloudy morn. helped keep
aft. temps. moderate.
.................The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is still around making low
passes overhead several times in an hour or two's time by the Kiwa Trail
before heading off toward Rest Lake. It shared the air with several NO.
HARRIER HAWKS (...sure plenty of these around today!!!). The
Red-Shoulder was a "1st timer" for me----I can now scratch it off my
frustrating lists of "no-see-ems"----birds people report seeing, and I
never have---and I rush out to the location reported only not to find
then---have either "moved on out", or they decided that "it wasn't my
day to see them" and moved elsewhere else near by. :-) Oh well, you all
know the story!!!!! Oldsquaws, Harlequin Ducks, and Golden Plovers ore
on "my hit list"---Birders keep reporting them, but when I get there
they are gone. (...Remember the Am. Golden Plover at Ridgefield NWR.
along the auro tour routt several weeks ago??? Was reported for over a
week, but when I got there it was gone---it had left the area the*day
before*.!!!)
...............Still a good number of TREE SWALLOWS around, along with
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, WOOD PEEWEES, WARBLERS (10 power binos.
couldn't focus close enough to ID. :-[ ) and some SPARROWS. GREAT BLUE
HERONS everywhere, along with GREAT EGRETS and AM. BITTERNS. River
water is being pumped through the sloughs to Rest Lake and other main
ponds, so very little mudflats around. However did observe a flock of
'peeps' acrosss Rest Lake from the viewing blind--- brown with whitish
rumps--of smaller size--looked like WESTERN SANDPIPERS. (....didn't have
my spotting scope with me this time around!!!).. Not too many shorebirds
around this Aug.-Sept.-----have seen many more in other years here.
Then. too...... the refuge personal seem to be pumping water in several
weeks earlier than usual this year.

..............Cheers....Gerald Hamilton

OBOL, hello!

I kind of suspect LWTB caught a few of you by surprise this year because
nobody but us three regulars showed up for opening day.

Anyway, the action was about what we expected for a pre-migration Summer's
day. Just a few birds. (I almost padded the list with a Dragon Fly but
figured it wouldn't be good form to do so).

A few Swallow species were milling way out at one end of the big lake. Too
far to identify. One Cedar Waxwing, two Northern Flickers, beaucoup American
Goldfinches, one Killdeer, one Turkey Vulture, one lone puddle-duck; the air
was too wiggly out there to identify it. (No, it wasn't Beatrix Potter's
Jemima; she's white, ours was brown.) two Great Blue Herons, one Mourning
Dove, and two urban Rock Doves way out by the old nest grove.

The reason I reported the (are they called Rock Doves anymore?) is because
we've seen that pair out there before. One is total white and they are wont
to do a lot of milling like Swallows before either settling down, or
departing the area. Today the brown one landed in shallow water along the
shore, leading us to wonder if maybe they might want to convert to the clean
living of waterfowl and leave their old life of sin behind.

For those with good legs (I prefer a cab) Jackson Bottom's north observation
deck is about a 3/4 to 7/8ths mile stroll from the transit center in
Hillsboro.

Wheelchair Friendly? ... Yes. Excellent off-street parking, and really easy
wheeler and walker access to a roofed and hand-railed deck. Some bench-style
seating inside the shelter, and more outside along a sidewalk.

Restrooms? ... Good ones available a mile south at Jackson's spiffy
education center. McDonald's is closer, at the corner of Baseline and 1st
Ave.

Gourmet Coffee? ... Nearest Starbucks is at the corner of Main and 1st Ave.
Convenient parking is competitive.

I was a Swift Watch volunteer last night 9/6. We had
somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 birds gather to
enter the chimney at Chapman School. One swift was
picked off by a Peregrine (male?) in the air. A few of
the approximately 75 people gathered noticed a skein
of about 75 geese (White-fronteds?) heading south high
overhead.

It was a pleasant evening and the beginning of the
Audubon Society of Portland-sponsored Swift Watch. If
you haven't seen this phenomenon, I urge you to drop
by some evening. Check for more details on the ASP
website.

Obol,
Yesterday and today while driving on Clear Lake Rd I spotted a slender
looking falcon. I stopped and got unsatisfactory binocular views
yesterday. Today the bird flew over my car and it appeared to have dark arm
pits by eye sight alone. Looks and flys very much like a PRAIRIE FALCON,
but my views have been fleeting.
   Last night around 5PM (9-6-07) I found 14 GREATER-WHITE FRONTED
GEESE north of Royal Ave. Both adult and juvenile birds. These birds were
north of the where the Buff-breasted and Ruff were. They were in the
company of many Canada Geese and two domestics who frequent the area. No
Cacklers yet.
Also last evening a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD flew over as I drove home on
Clear Lake Rd. It was in a large blackbird flock.
