Hi birders,

This afternoon around 2:30 a COMMON TERN was at the Philomath STP (SW of
Corvallis). It flew a couple laps around the south pond then sat on the mud
for a few minutes. Relatively long red legs, relatively long beak 2/3
colored black with red at the base and on the lower mandible, wingtips
projecting past the tail, a slightly forked white tail, dark gray flight
feathers, an obvious dark carpal bar on the wing in flight and perched, and
a black nape with white from the forehead to crown characterized an adult
transitioning from breeding to winter plumage. It stuck around for about 10
minutes then got chased off by a throng of 30 Brewer's Blackbirds,
eventually disappearing into the clouds off to the east. This may be the
first Benton Co. record (?) An EARED GREBE is on the ponds as well and lots
of SHOVELERS, maybe 200.

Mary's Peak had a few migrants this afternoon:
4 - HORNED LARKS - chunky and pale, probably _albicola_
50 - AMERICAN PIPITS
1 - YELLOW WARBLER
1 - GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW
2 - FOX SPARROWS
1 - RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET
1 - HERMIT THRUSH

Good birding,

Noah Strycker
