Lincoln County Fall 2007 NAMC Results - September 15 &
16

Thanks to our participants:

Most of the numbers below are estimates, not exact
counts, but a good impression of relative numbers:

Divers That Don't Quack

Pacific Loon	 - 1 (south side of the LNG peninsula)
Western Grebe - 4
Brown Pelican - 70
Brandt's Cormorant - 7 (we did not cover Yaquina Head
or Seal Rock)
Double-crested Cormorant - 1000 (there were huge
flocks in Alsea Bay)
Pelagic Cormorant - 1 (we did not cover Yaquina Head
or Seal Rock)

Osprey - 1 (this bird put on a spectacular show for us
diving for fish)

Shorebirds

Black-bellied Plover - 20 (Siletz Bay/Mo's Dock)
Killdeer - 22 (Siletz Bay, Lint Slough, Alsea Bay)
Black Oystercatcher - 1 (we did not cover Yaquina Head
or Seal Rock)
Greater Yellowlegs - 10 (Boone Slough, the birder who
found these said they were distant and hard to ID -
but I trust her intuition)
Willet - 1 (Lint Slough - not 100% sure of ID but we
got long good looks at it)
Spotted Sandpiper - 18 (Siletz Bay, Lint Slough - no
spots/non-breeding plumage)
Black Turnstone - 2  (we did not cover Yaquina Head or
Seal Rock)
Western Sandpiper - 120 (HMSC, Lint Slough, Alsea Bay)
Least Sandpiper - 27 (Sallys Bend, Lint Slough)
Unidentified Peeps - 60

(there were many more shorebirds in Lincoln County a
couple of weeks before)

(I was disappointed in finding no terns - flocks were
seen in the weeks preceeding the count)

Goals for improvement: earlier start organizing it,
ocean watches (I think all coastal counties should
include these), inclusion of a few more sites,
inclusion of more "expert birders," more training for
new birders
