Going after the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper seemed like a good idea today. We met Tom Mickle north of Royal Avenue and we all looked without success for this bird. However, the cold early morning turned into a clear and sunny late morning and we had good views of several shorebirds, including eight Pectoral Sandpipers. Here is a partial list of our sightings.
Clarke's Grebe as well as distant Westerns
American Bitterns
3 or 4 White Tailed Kites
Red-shouldered Hawk calling from Gibson Island
3 Black-bellied Plovers
4 or 5 Semi Plovers
Many Greater Yellowlegs
2 or 3 Lesser Yellowlegs
8 Pectoral Sandpipers
large numbers of Leasts with a few Western Sandpipers
12 Long-billed Dowitchers
2 Wilson's Snipe
2 Black Phoebes
1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow, with gobs of Barns and Violet-greens
300 or so American Pipits
8 - 10 Yellow-rumped Warblers
1 Common Yellowthroat
1 Lincoln's Sparrow
