No, Kim, they are not White Pelicans. Brown Pelicans are the coastal
variety. Any field guides with maps will show the respective ranges.

Cindy -

The pelican and wind spectacle Yaquina Head sounds like something special to
observe. Were these White ones?

We had an abundance of White Pelicans here in Harney Co. a few weeks past. I
am not sure if they are still here but there were many more present then I
ever remember seeing before. Before water dropped at the new carp screens at
the Narrows Bridge one could observe them feeding at a very close distance
(20 yards or so). I was amazed at how many carp one pelican can consume in a
small amount of time. They were catching many each scoop. I could plainly
see that sometimes they would catch 6 or 8 fish at a time (not really small
fish either) and then they would choke them down and scoop more up again.

I observed that some of them have what I call floppy chin, as their lower
beak seemed to flop and be out of alignment with the upper beak. I am
curious if this, is a trait that comes with age? It seemed to be the mature
looking bird that were like this.

As pictured here -

Not all were like that.
