Hi Kim,

Great photo!

The pelicans at Yaquina Head were indeed Brown
Pelicans. You got me curious if White Pelicans have
ever been reported here so I checked Range Bayer's
website for Lincoln County records (where would we
look this up for the entire coast?). White Pelicans
have been seen in Lincoln County in at least 4 years:

1973 - March (and unconfirmed in late February - site
not given)
1995 - November 16 (in Toledo, not 100% certain)
2001 - June 22 (over Yaquina Bay)
2003 - May 25, 26, 27, 28 & June 23, 24 (some flying
with Brown Pelicans, between the jetties, Seal Rock,
and King Slough)

How many have passed through completely undetected
because no one was looking for them?

I will be keeping an ongoing lookout for White
Pelicans, Snowy Owls, and sea otters where they're not
supposed to be :-)

Question: has anyone ever seen a leucistic/albino
Brown Pelican?
