Thank you to all who have responded both off-list and
on-list. I am mystified as to what I saw but I will
take all of your suggestions back with me today. I
hope these birds are still around Yaquina Head today
so I can get another look.

Here are a couple more notes to make clearer what I
saw:

1. Size-wise: Most definitely bigger than a
Sabine's/Bonaparte's Gull (I have no doubts about
this). Definitely smaller than a Western Gull (I have
no doubts about this). Somewhere between the size of a
California Gull and a Mew Gull but much bulkier.

2. Wing-pattern: both the upperwing and the lower wing
had the overall pattern of being light trimmed with
black but the underwing was a crisper cleaner pure
white and the trim was the only dark I saw. The
upperwing was trimmed in dark but there were some
additional dark marks and the white not as clean.

3. I also saw very clearly a dark band on the distal
end of the tail.

I did not pay as close attention to the beak as I was
focused on the pattern.

Hope this helps clarify. If I see these again, I will
pay very close attention to the way they fly.
