A great id-learning tool is Greg Gillson's sort-of-monthly bird quiz. I 
didn't check it out until a few months ago, because I assumed it was for 
the super birders, those who ramble on about this and that subspecies 
and the finer points of feather wear... but I was wrong. I finally went 
to the site and checked out the previous quizzes and their answers. Greg 
gives complete reasons why the birds are what they are and why they are 
not something else. The quizzes make me pull out all my field guides and 
really think about what makes one species different from another. It's a 
great learning tool for everyone from beginners to advanced. You don't 
have to enter the quiz. Just go to the page and scroll down to the
