I would like to recommend an excellent birding book:

Birders   Tales of a Tribe  by British birder Mark Cocker (ISBN 0-87113-844-1)

This book covers everything from a history of British birding to hilarious and tragic stories of the birder.
Tales from birders being sprayed with sewage to death by tiger appear in the book.  In addition to many excellent stories there is a serious look at birding ethics, and international birding.

An example:
A man cuts a hole in his roof so that he can climb up and look into a neighboring pond to claim a new yard bird.

There are many reviews on Amazon.com.  Humor is required.
