At least two Ravens created quite a stir at Tryon Creek this afternoon.
Every Crow around succumbed to a frenzied terror and seemed to bolt the forest
like a vanquished horde. From what I can gather, Common Ravens, though
widespread in Oregon are rare around the Portland area and Northern Willamette
Valley, so I thought I'd post to anyone who might have a passing local interest.
The birds were not too far from the parking lot, near the intersection of the
Big Fir and Center Trails. They should be easy to hear, and were engaging in a
Starling-like repertoire of screams, grows and metallic clucks, sounding
more like the Coucals of Asia than the Corvids of our northerly climes. The
Northern Saw-Whet was seemingly absent from its box behind the nature center, as
it has been lately, though that box has slowly been filling with moss and
vegetation. Hmmmm...
Best wishes & Good birding,
