Hi Range & All,

Thank you for the thoughtful comments and excellent suggestions on how
to archive bird records for the future. Scholars Archive sounds like a
good resource to work with.

I have a bit of good news regarding OBOL archives:

Skip Russell confirms that he has many (possibly all) of the earlier
OBOL messages, going back to the days before OBOL became a listserv and
was just an e-mail list. He says that there are some old
hardware/software issues to work through but he thinks it's possible to
recover these files.

So between the files that Skip had saved and the ones that I have from
mid-1999 onward, we may be able to reconstruct the entire history of
OBOL (keep your fingers crossed).

Thanks to Tim Janzen for suggesting that I contact Skip. As much as we
can pull together, I'll put on CD-ROM or DVD to give us a stable
archive, and then work to make this accessible on the OFO website at
www.oregonbirds.org.

Happy archiving,
Joel

P.S. About those old WordStar files, it might be worth checking if a
filter exists to open these files with the OpenOffice.org suite (which
can then save to Word/WordPerfect etc. formats).
